The American Bankers Association (ABA) has sponsored a groundbreaking
program that enables financial institutions to help solve the problem
of anonymity on the Internet. The ABA governs the policy and contract
infrastructure behind the TrustID digital certificate program.
The ABA policy includes guidance on areas such as liability, identification
and authentication of certificate holders, certificate life-cycle
operational requirements, facility management controls, technical
security controls, and policy administration. With the backing of
the ABA and its 125 years of protecting the interests of financial
institutions and their customers, users of TrustID services can
be assured of the highest standards of security, confidentiality,
and the industry's best warranty.
This new policy allows financial institutions to issue their customers
TrustID certificates, permitting those certificates to be used between
organizations and across industry lines. With this support, digital
certificates will soon become as pervasive and easy to use as credit
cards. Consumers will be able to use a single digital certificate
with multiple merchants and vendors, eliminating the need to establish
separate digital identifications for each of the merchants and organizations
they interact with online.
